Revised Rule VI.B. Re: 3rd Set/10-point Tiebreak PLEASE READ
Good afternoon Captains and Club Pros,

We recently asked for feedback on the Tennis Competitors' best of 3 sets format and we thank all of you for your thoughtful responses! Issues of heat, pressures on court availability, travel to matches and the increasingly long duration of matches have been central to your concerns and have been cited as reasons to either revise or allow more flexibility in the best of 3 sets format. Equally, many of you value and enjoy a best of 3 sets challenge.

We have discussed the options and Tennis Competitors will retain its best of 3 sets format with the following exceptions, which we believe will give both captains and players the flexibility to use a Match Tiebreak when needed.

VI. MATCH PLAY

B. Individual matches will be the best 2 of 3 sets, regular scoring but with the following exceptions:

      1. Opposing captains are permitted to decide together prior to the match start time that they will implement a 10-point Match Tiebreak in lieu of a 3rd set for any specific line(s) or all lines of a match, as they mutually agree is necessary e.g., impending rain or anticipated high heat.

     2. For those clubs that have court availability restrictions, the Home Team Captain may stipulate in writing to their opposing Captain prior to the match date that the 10-point Match TieBreak in lieu of a 3rd set will be enforced for any specific line(s) or all lines of the match. Please copy your Coordinator.

     3. Captains must communicate any agreement to their respective players ahead of the match start time.

     4. Regardless of any agreement between the captains, any line in a split-sets situation with UNANIMOUS consent between all 4 players on the court, may opt to play a 10-point Match Tiebreak in lieu of a 3rd set due to an unusual circumstance e.g., an overly long match, unanticipated high heat. In the absence of a unanimous decision, a full third set must be played.

Match TieBreaker under Rule XIII (A) should be recorded with a set score of 6-0 and the tiebreak numbers in the tie box.

We will have this in place for the upcoming Fall season as a trial and we ask that you forward this to your players so they can fully understand the options. Thank you all so much for your input which has helped us work through a complicated issue.

All the best,

TCSD Committee
